(Australia's wheatlands have varied in area from 25 million acres around 1930 to 15 million today). In much of NSW, the original savannah land environment has completely disappeared in favour of wheat fields. Keith Pike, who has been rice farming since 1929, grew world record crop in 1955. He harvested 65 bags (more than 4 tons) per acre in a 45-acre paddock. It was the first time rice had been grown in the paddock for 9 years. Pike believes long rotation of rice with wheat and pasture is secret of successful rice culture. He has 600 acres of land usable for rice growing, sows only 60 acres yearly, thus maintaining a 10 year rotation program |
