I think you will be surprised at the view from our drawing room windows. We are on the highest point of the torwn and there are no houses before us ... The ground around us is the Domain public ground through which there are very beautiful drives ... Robert walks through these pretty grounds every morning to bathe and the baths you will see in a sketch taken from the oppositie shore -- Georgiana Lowe, 24 December 1843. MSS 5625

"Just now during John's absence I find amusement and employment in drasing some of the plants of the Colony, which will help to render the work on Birds of Austraia more interesting. All our sketches are much approved and of and highly compmented by our friends. I wish you could hear some of the speeches that are frequently made us, because I know you like dearly to hear your daghter praised. But at the end of all I sigh and think f I could but see old England again and the clear dear treasures it contains. I would contentedly sit down at my working table and stroke, stroke away to the end of the chapter, that is, health permitting.

The Gum Tree Pattern Plate by Olive

1-Mar-21

SLIDES 75/Item 79

Reproduction from The Home
Sydney, Art in Australia, 1921
ML Q059/H
A simple yet beautiful gem of the Austral is enshrined in this interesting plate. The Ancestral Pile on the right of the picture was the Seaside Residence of Doo-Ti. a thin-lipped Officer of State, whose Wordly Prosperity is evidenced by the Barobial Boat-house, which nestles behind a Wattle Tree in bloom. From the green pleasurance of his Front Lawn stretched [] Rustic Bridge, spanning the silver belt of Water from the Stately Gum Tree to the Gardeners' Lodge beyond.
And this is the story which will live on forever in the Gum Tree Pattern Plate.
The stern Doo-Ti had a daughter, Loo See, whose Mental Graces were surpassed only by her Physical Perfections. He also had as Private Secretary a Youth of Great Promise, named Jon Sun, who seeing the Beauty of Loo See daily before him, conceived for a Passion which was By No Means Unreciprocated.
Now Doo-Ti had in mind, as Suitor for his daughter's hand, a certain Wealthy Miner, and frowned upon the Pretensions of Jon Sun. But since Youth will not be Denied, the lovers (fortified by the Acquisition of Doo-Ti's Wallet) eloped, and took Refuge in the Gardener's Lodge, whence they escaped by Boat to Jon Sun's island home, and from there were Borne to Safety by a Kindly Airman.
It is Confidently Asserted that they lived happily Ever after.

"Went along to the P and O Office with two posters suggestions this afternoon. Man kept one to consider it for a couple of days and asked me how much I wanted for it. Was so surprised that I didn't know what to say so finally he said would I like them to make me an offer for it, so we left it at that."

Up early as usual & working on & off in my room most of day to get [manuscript] finished. Weather seems set fine for the present & quite nippy in the morning & evening. Aurora visible at night"

Got [Lantana Lane manuscript] ready to send away in morning. In afternoon [Eric] & I up to shops, bank, P.O. & posted it - with what relief! ... In evening [Eric] & I celebrated end of five year struggle with [Lantana Lane] by going to dinner... Lovely day, with hint of early autumn in the air"

When I arrive she says, "I hope you don't mind but there's a knock on the door and he appears"
She is fun to be with, but I can't get used to her humour. When she says "I know you're more an artist than a photographer, but William, can you do me a passport photo?' I wonder if she sending me up.
